Beitan Tower, also known as Shigong Tower, was built in the 13th year of Qianlong era in the Qing Dynasty (In 1748) for Jiexiu people to commemorate Shi Jishi’s contribution to encouraging education and relieving hunger as the magistrate of Jiexiu County in the 24th year of Wanli era in the Ming Dynasty (In 1596). The 35-meter-high building is a seven-storied octagonal brick tower. It looks majestic and dazzling with stupa tops and plinths decorated with yellow and green colored glaze. On the west, each floor has brick windows on four sides with wooden ladders and steps for overlooking the distance. There are ginkgo trees on the top of the Tower. Whenever the fruits fall to the ground, people regard them as celestial treasures and rush to eat. Behind the Tower is Zhuge Liang Temple, and in front of the Tower are small pavilions, pools, and green willows. Beitan Park has been built around the Tower in recent years. Shi Jishi, styled Yibo, was a successful candidate in imperial examinations from Weinan County, Shaanxi Province. He was appointed magistrate of Jiexiu County in the 24th year of Wanli era in the Ming Dynasty. During his four-year tenure of office, he led the people in building canals and sinking wells, rectified water regulations, established schools, and gave lectures in person. During the dry season, Shi Jishi donated his salary and mobilized rich families to relieve the people in the stricken areas. As he once intended to “build a tower in the northwest corner to strengthen the city” but did not have the luxury of time to implement it, over 150 years later, locals raised funds to build the tower in memory of Shi Jishi’s merits and virtues.
