Shima Temple is located in Shima Village, 15 kilometers southwest of Xiyang County, Shanxi Province. Originally called Luoying Temple, it was named as Shifo Temple after the establishment of grottoes in the Northern Wei Dynasty, and renamed as Shima Temple allegedly due to two stone horses awarded by Li Shimin, the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty. Corridors and a temple were set up around the statues during the Xining era in the Northern Song Dynasty. Shima Temple becomes active with gradual expansions in the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. It was originally a small group of cliff statues with stone carvings as the main body. Later generations built temples and halls surrounding the statues, thus forming the layout of Buddhist temples. It was called Shousheng Temple in the Song Dynasty, while commonly known as Shima Temple due to two stone horses in front of the Temple. Inside are preserved about 1,000 stone statues. Among these carvings, the largest is 5 meters high, the smallest is 5 centimeters high, and 66 statues are over 1 meter high. About 70% of them were sculpted in the Northern Wei and Qi Dynasties, and the rest were works of the Sui and Tang Dynasties.
