Shanxi Forestry and Grassland Bureau recently designated 40 important migration corridors for migratory birds, while also clarifying the main tasks required to protect these corridors.

China is divided into three migration zones for migratory birds: the eastern, central, and western zones. Shanxi belongs to the central zone along the Yellow River basin, which is a key area for migration and wintering.

The main period for birds to migrate south is from mid-October to late November, while the main period for northward migration is from late February to late April of the following year.

Shanxi is home to 426 bird species, including 344 migratory species.

The main tasks involved in the protection of migratory bird corridors include taking appropriate measures based on local conditions, carrying out habitat conservation and ecological restoration for migratory birds, and continuously optimizing the habitat to facilitate their resting, breeding, and wintering.

For important migratory bird corridors, monitoring and assessing the quality of their habitats will be conducted to provide support for decision-making on their conservation.

In areas where migratory birds gather, rest and winter, efforts will be strengthened to patrol, protect, and guard against illegal activities such as the poisoning and hunting of migratory birds. Prompt treatment will be provided to sick or weak migratory birds.

Additionally, Shanxi will enhance the capacity of monitoring institutions for migratory bird protection and build more supporting infrastructure.
