Overview of Science, Education, Culture and Health Care

By the end of the year, there were 6,973 kindergartens, 5,445 primary schools, 1,787 regular junior high schools, 512 regular senior high schools, 442 secondary vocational schools, 83 regular institutions of higher learning and 10 higher educational institutions for adults. The gross enrollment rate of preschool education in the province was 89.7%, the net enrollment rate of primary school-age children was 99.95%, the gross enrollment rate of senior high school was 96.58%, and the gross enrollment rate of higher education was 48.5%.

This year, 27,106 patent applications were filed across the province, up 31.0%. Among them, 9,395 were applications for invention patents, up 27.3%. The total number of patents granted in the province was 15,060, up 33.1%. Among them, 2,284 patents were invention patents, down 4.1%. There were 28 state-level corporate technology centers and 300 provincial-level corporate technology centers. According to the national measures on the ascertainment of hi-tech enterprises, there were a total of 1,630 hi-tech enterprises in the province by the end of the year.

By the end of the year, there were 126 technical institutions for product quality supervision, inspection and metrological verification at the provincial, municipal and state levels, and 6 national inspection centers in the province. In this year, 7,794 enterprises were supervised and sampled for the inspection of 11,170 batches of products and commodities of 187 kinds in 10 categories. In the whole year, 1.4 million measuring instruments were subjected to compulsory verification.

By the end of the year, there were 109 meteorological stations in the province, including 2 stations offering automatic telephone weather consultation. There are 109 organizations in the meteorological sector of the province offering out weather modification services. The cumulative benefited area of hail suppression and precipitation enhancement covered the whole province, with 3.007 billion cubic meters of rainfall increased in the province. By the end of the year, there were 10 specialized comprehensive seismic stations, 1 provincial seismic network center and 1 provincial digital seismic network in the province. In this year, there were 3 earthquakes at M3.0-M4.0 in the whole province, with the largest magnitude of M3.6.

By the end of the year, there were 129 cultural centers, 1,409 cultural stations (including 1,196 comprehensive cultural stations of villages and townships) and 28,000 rural cultural activity venues in the whole province. There were 665 professional performing troupes and 127 public libraries in the province. 1.89 billion copies of 60 newspapers (excluding campus newspapers of colleges and universities), 21.873 million copies of 201 magazines and 90.69 million copies of 3,238 books were published in the whole year. There were 117 radio and television stations, 2 television stations, 15 medium and short-wave transmitting stations, 200 FM transmitting stations and 174 TV transmitting stations over 100 watts in the province. The coverage rate of broadcasting population was 98.8%, that of the television population was 99.6%, and that of the cable television users was 4.656 million.

By the end of the year, there were 42,000 health institutions (including clinics and village clinics) with 208,000 beds. There were 449 specialized public health institutions and 133 maternal and child health care hospitals (centers and stations). There were 246,000 health care workers in the health care sector of the province. There were 23,000 health care workers in health centers, including 21,000 in rural and township health centers. There were 12,000 health workers in community health service centers (stations), 19,000 workers in professional public health institutions and 10,000 in maternal and child health care hospitals (centers and stations).

By the end of the year, there were 101 stadiums and 96 gymnasiums in the province. Throughout the year, athletes of the province won 103 gold, 104 silver and 122 bronze medals (including non-Olympic events) in major competitions at home and abroad. In this year, 11 million people participated in regular physical exercises and 99 national fitness programs. In this year, the sales of Chinese sports lotteries in this province reached RMB4.284 billion, up 22.6%.
