Located in the middle reaches of Yellow River basin, Shanxi was one of birth places of ancient Chinese civilization, and the frontier and hub for blending farming and nomadic cultures. It has witnessed many national integration processes and made unique contributions to the development and evolution of Chinese history and culture.


Founded in 1919, Shanxi Museum is one of oldest museums in China, and the largest educational research center for collecting, protecting and displaying cultural relics and art objects in Shanxi Province. The new museum is located on the west bank of Fenhe River in Taiyuan City, the capital city of Shanxi Province. Covering an area of 168 mu, with construction area of 52,000 m2, and exhibition room of 10,000 m2, Shanxi Museum has more than 400,000 extraordinary artifacts that reflect the historical development and cultural essences of Shanxi, the middle reaches of Yellow River basin and ancient North China. The permanent exhibition themed the “Soul of Shanxi” reflects the highlights of Shanxi history and culture chronologically. The exhibits are quite distinctive, such as elegant jade wares and stone implements from prehistoric period, exquisite bronze wares in Shang Dynasty, relics of Jin State during East Zhou and West Zhou Dynasties, stone statues in Northern Dynasties, amazing brick carves about Shanxi opera and folklore in Song, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, and cultural relics about Shanxi Merchants in Ming and Qing dynasties.


In recent years, Shanxi Museum had successfully introduced and held more than 120 temporary exhibitions. Meanwhile, it organized and launched more than 70 special exhibitions with themes like Shanxi Ancient Art, Fine Cultural Relics of Jin State, Stone Coffins from Yuhong's Tomb in Sui Dynasty, Brick Carving Art of Jin and Yuan Dynasties, Buddhist Statue Art, Water and Land Paintings of Ming and Qing dynasties, Calligraphic Masterpieces of Fu Shan, etc, in famous international museums in the United States, U.K., France, Russia, Japan, Australia and other countries, as well as domestic museums. Some fine art objects from Shanxi Museum had been selected to take part in 55 international cooperative exhibition programs. The museum strives to disseminate human civilization, inherit excellent culture, enrich public culture, publicize Shanxi culture and promote international exchanges and cooperation.


Shanxi Museum has excellent cultural relics protection teams and advanced technological protection facilities and equipment. It has completed more than 70 national, provincial, ministerial, and individual scientific research and cultural relics protection projects, and successfully implemented rescue relocation and protection works for 20+ tomb murals which were created from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to Jin and Yuan dynasties.

Traffic Information 
By car: Drive to Binhe West Road, turn right and go north for 1 km to get to Shanxi Museum.

By bus: Take No.865 Bus in the city to get there. 
Tour Reminder   
1. The Museum sets up a place to offer tickets for tourists to access the museum. The ticket is valid only on the day it is issued. According to the reception capacity of the exhibition hall, the number of tourists is limited to 4,000 per day. Tickets are offered at an interval, allowing 2,000 tourists in the morning and 2,000 in the afternoon in order to ensure safety of cultural relics and tourists. 2.
