Shanxi achieved comprehensive and sustained improvements in its ecological environment last year, reaching record levels in several key ecological indicators.
In 2025, Shanxi's comprehensive air quality index was 3.73, with the proportion of days with excellent air quality reaching 81.4 percent, a 7.2 percentage point increase from 2024. All six major pollutants showed year-on-year declines.
In terms of water environment management, all national surface water monitoring sections in the province met Class IV or higher water quality standards in 2025, and the proportion of excellent water bodies reached 98.9 percent. In the Fenhe River basin, 95.2 percent of water bodies were rated excellent, up 14.2 percentage points from the previous year. The water quality of the Yellow River's main stream (Shanxi section) maintained Class II status for the fourth consecutive year.
The safe utilization rate of polluted arable land remained above 98 percent. A total of 573 rural black and odorous water bodies were treated, and the rural domestic sewage treatment rate exceeded 50 percent.
Beyond air, water, and soil, Shanxi's acoustic environment, ecological quality, and radiation environment also maintained positive trends in 2025. The province's Ecological Quality Index (EQI) stood at 57.53, classified as a second-class excellent level, indicating stable and continually improving ecosystem structure and function.
Shanxi plans to continue precise, scientific, and systematic pollution control efforts to consolidate ecological achievements and advance its green development.
